The monthly meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m.by Bob Brauer,President.
BUSINESS DISCUSSION:
●By-Laws Update:By-Law revisions approved by quorum vote.
●MEC Project Update:Bob noted that the core group of No MEC has been joined by BREDL
(Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League)and another environmental group to continue in
opposition to the gas storage facility in Timberlake.
●Update on school library outreach programs:Cheryl put bookplates in the donation books for
each of the elementary school libraries and distributed them to members requesting that they take
the books by their local schools and obtain pictures of the school’s librarian receiving the book so
that it can be posted on our Facebook page.She has also selected another book for the following
school year for donation.It is entitled,“Protecting the Planet”by Louise Spilbury.
●Advanced Planning for Spring Litter Sweep:Discussion of ways to recruit more volunteers for
the spring litter sweep,planned for April 20,2024.A goal was set to increase participation by
75%.
●Updating the trifold brochure:Bob gave Bailey a copy of our trifold brochure so that she can
update it.
●Additional Anti-Liter signs in Person County:Cheryl reported that DOT does not make the
anti-litter signs for roadsides anymore.Local supervisor is going to check to see if there are any
available and get back to her.Members recommend that Lawson Chapel Road and Chub Lake
Road are two of the worst littered roads where these signs are needed.
●Status of Toxic Waste Disposal Day:Due to a need of $15,000-$25,000 to fund this undertaking,
Bob will talk with the assistant county manager regarding a request that Republic help with this
cost.He noted that Amanda at Recycling Center might also approach Republic about this.
●Coal Ash Issue:Bob will meet with Beth Townsend at Duke Energy to get an update on the coal
ash issue.
●2024 CT article plans and status:Discussion on ideas for future articles for the CT newspaper.
Bob will send a draft of an article for the newspaper.
