05-02-2024 Meeting Minutes EIACEnvironmental Issues Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes Person County Senior Center Social Hall,87 Semora Road,Roxboro,NC 27573 May 2,2024 Voting Members Present:Bob Brauer,Steve Evans, Others Present:Sandy Pleasant,Bo Freeman,Nancy McCormick The monthly meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m.by Bob Brauer,President. A quorum of voting members was not present. BUSINESS DISCUSSION: ●Litter Sweep Recap:Bob noted that we had exceeded our goal of 75 participants in the Spring Litter Sweep,with about 100 volunteers and approximately 68 bags of trash collected and picked up by DOT on Tuesday following the sweep.The fall litter sweep will be planned for September 21st or 28th. ●MEC Project Update:Bob noted that No-MEC had had a fund-raiser recently.He encouraged others to go to the NoMEC.org website for information on their activities.At this point a clean air permit has not been obtained,so no construction of the actual plant has started;however,some land clearing has begun at the site.Also there is a lawsuit that’s been filed against Person County regarding the zoning change for the land. ●Update on School/Library Outreach:Due to book deliveries having been completed,this item will be removed from Business items for discussion.The fall book has been purchased by Cheryl and will be distributed in the fall. ●Updating the EIAC trifold brochure:Further changes to the brochure have been noted by Bob.It now is going to be an official PC EIAC document and the Facebook page reference has been removed.Bob has put his contact information on the brochure for those wanting information on the committee.The Facebook page has been renamed “Friends of Person County Environment” (https://facebook.com/pcncenv) ●Status of Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Day:Bob noted that September 7th has been set for the household hazardous waste disposal day.The event is scheduled from 9:00 –12:00 noon and will take place in the parking lot of DSS/Health Department.Volunteers will be needed to assist with this event in September. ●Coal Ash Issue:Bob will continue in efforts to talk with Beth Townsend at Duke Energy to get an update on the coal ash issue.Everyone is in agreement that this issue still remains relevant and important. ●2024 CT article plans and status:Discussion on ideas for future articles for the CT newspaper.An article on composting has been completed for the month of May and an article on PFAS chemicals is being planned for publication in June.
