09-05-2024 Meeting Minutes EIAC Environmental Issues Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes Person County Senior Center Social Hall, 87 Semora Road, Roxboro, NC 27573 September 5, 2024 Voting Members Present: Bob Brauer, Cheryl Allen, Sammy Clayton, Larry Williams, Steve Evans, Bailey Hunt Others Present: Nancy McCormick The monthly meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Bob Brauer, President. A quorum of voting members was present. BUSINESS DISCUSSION: ● Meeting Minutes Approval: The August minutes were reviewed and approved. ● Household Hazardous Waste Day: This event is scheduled for Saturday September 7th, 2024, from 9am-12pm and will take place in the parking lot of DSS/Health Department. Steve Evans, Sammy Clayton and Bailey Hunt are planning to volunteer. ● Fall Litter Sweep: Plans are finalized for the sweep on Saturday September 21st, 2024. Bob has received additional supplies from DOT (Bags and safety vests). Members are continuing to work to communicate to all potential volunteers about the event. ● Personality Festival: This year ’s Personality Festival is scheduled for Saturday October 26, 2024. Bob has submitted our application for a complementary booth to be staffed jointly with the PI Recycle team. Sandy has secured a complementary chair from Polywood which we can use as a give-away at the event. We discussed the idea of asking attendees to sign a no-littering pledge as a part of entering the raffle to win the chair. Cheryl will propose signage for the chair. Bob will inventory other give-away materials for the event. ● MEC Project Update: No further updates from the DEQ hearing. DEQs original plan was to respond within 30 days which has not been met. MEC site preparation work is continuing. ● Book Distribution: Distribution of the book, Protecting the Planet by Louise Spilsbury, to all Person County elementary schools was completed as planned. This project along with a EIAC group photo will be highlighted in our September CT article scheduled for publication on September 12th, 2024. ● Coal Ash Issue: Bob will continue in efforts to talk with Beth Townsend at Duke Energy to get an update on the coal ash issue. Everyone is in agreement that this issue still remains relevant and important. ● Country Club Road: We had a brief discussion on proposals to close a portion of this road in support of the Mega Park. No specific environmental impacts associated with the road closure were identified ● 2024 CT article plans and status: Discussion on ideas and plans for future articles for the CT newspaper. o September - Book Distribution and Litter Sweep plan - planned publish date 9/12/2024 o October - Coal Ash Toxicity - planned o November - Coal Ash Mitigation - planned o December - TBD There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m. Next meeting is October 3, 2024 at the Senior Center Social Hall at 5:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Bob Brauer Chairperson EIAC Date Approved: January 2, 2025
