Environmental Issues Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes

Voting Members Present: Bob Brauer, Sammy Clayton, Cheryl Allen, Holly Emerson, Bailey Hunt, Steve
Evans
Others Present: Nancy McCormick, Tim Ess and students
The monthly meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Bob Brauer, President.
A quorum of voting members was present.
BUSINESS DISCUSSION:
● Meeting Minutes Approval: March 2025 minutes were unanimously approved with no further
discussion or changes.
● Introduction of guests: Tim Ess from Roxboro Charter School (RCS) and several of his students
participating in a school environmental club attended. Tim and his students discussed their
current initiative to improve the effectiveness of the RCS Recycle Program. Bob encouraged the
group to participate in the upcoming Litter Sweep and continue to collaborate with EIAC.
● Book Distribution: Latest book selection ready for delivery pending fall distribution plan.
● 2025 Litter Sweeps: The Spring Litter Sweep is scheduled for April 12th. Bob reported that all
equipment items are ready for the event. The April CT article was published today (4/3) and
includes information about the sweep. Also, Lynda Clayton has submitted the flier to the CT for
publication next Thursday (4/10).
● Solar Projects: Cypress Creek’s Hyco Solar project is currently expected to go before the
Planning Board in May and the County Commissioners in June.
● MEC Project Update: Sammy reported seeing road damage from construction traffic in the area
of the MEC site.
● Microsoft Megasite: Questions about this project are being compiled by the community. Meeting
sponsored by Appalachian Voices is scheduled for April 10th to discuss the status. Bob will
distribute further details on the meeting via email.
● Hyco Coal/Gas Conversion: Meeting sponsored by Appalachian Voices is scheduled for April
10th to discuss the status. Bob will distribute further details on the meeting via email.
● 2025 CT article plans and status: Discussion on ideas and plans for future articles for the CT
newspaper.
○ January - Clean Water Act (Published)
○ February - 2024 NC Climate Report (Published)
○ March - Responsible Pesticide Usage (Published)
○ April - Adopt a Highway in Person County (Published)
○ May - Impacts of cutting old-growth timber
Possible future topics: Super fund site update, Invasive species
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m. Next meeting is May 1, 2025 at the
Senior Center Social Hall at 5:30 p.m.
