Environmental Issues Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes

Voting Members Present: Bob Brauer, Sammy Clayton, Bailey Hunt, Steve Evans
Others Present: Nancy McCormick
The monthly meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Bob Brauer, President.
A quorum of voting members was present.
BUSINESS DISCUSSION:
● Meeting Minutes Approval: April 2025 minutes were unanimously approved with no further
discussion or changes.
● Guests/Special Announcements: No guests were in attendance. Nancy McCormick distributed
reusable lunch bags to all EIAC members provided by the county in appreciation of member ’s
volunteer service. The gift was much appreciated.
● State Budget: Committee alerted to possible budget reduction/elimination for the State Office of
Environmental Education (OEE). All members are encouraged to contact their state
representative (Ray Jeffers) and provide input.
● Book Distribution: Latest book selection ready for delivery pending fall distribution plan.
Cheryl Allen is leading this effort.
● 2025 Litter Sweeps: Bob reported on final results of the Spring Litter Sweep:
The Fall Litter Sweep is planned for September 13th. No schedule conflicts were identified.
● Solar Projects: Cypress Creek’s Hyco Solar project is currently expected to go before the
Planning Board on May 8th. Bob is planning to attend.
● MEC Project Update: No updates.
● Microsoft Megasite: Meeting sponsored by Appalachian Voices held April 10th to discuss the
status. Bob submitted a final list of questions concerning construction and steady-state operations
of the proposed sites.
● Hyco Coal/Gas Conversion: Public hearing schedule for May 5th on Duke Energy’s request to
build a second methane gas power plant on Hyco Lake.
● 2025 CT article plans and status: Discussion on ideas and plans for future articles for the CT
newspaper.

○ March - Responsible Pesticide Usage (Published)
○ April - Adopt a Highway in Person County (Published)
○ May - Earth Day 2025 (Submitted but not published)
○ June - Person County Timber Harvest (Planned)
○ July - TBD
Possible future topics: Super fund site update, Invasive species
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m. Next meeting is June 5, 2025 at the
Senior Center Social Hall at 5:30 p.m.
