HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-07-2026 Meeting Minutes EIAC1 Environmental Issues Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes Person County Senior Center Social Hall, 87 Semora Road, Roxboro, NC 27573 May 7, 2026 Voting Members Present: Bob Brauer, Holly Emerson, Bailey Hunt, Sammy Clayton, Cheryl Allen Other Attendees: Nancy McCormick, Robert Allen The monthly meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Bob Brauer, Chairperson. A quorum of voting members was present. BUSINESS DISCUSSION: ● Meeting Minutes Approval: April 2026 minutes were approved with no further discussion or changes. ● Guests/Special Announcements: Robert Allen attended the meeting and was asked to speak about his work as a part of the planning board on the Universal Development Ordinance(UDO). ● Universal Development Ordinance: Robert spoke about the Universal Development Ordinance created in 2023 as a document to consolidate all development ordinances for Person County into a single document. The UDO as prepared by the planning board was not taken up or voted on by the BOC. Currently elements of this document are being used for a new consolidated ordinance document. EIAC’s interest in this document is as a way to proactively prevent undesirable and/or environmentally harmful development in Person County. ● Spring Litter Sweep: The Spring Litter Sweep was well attended and produced good results: ● Household Hazardous Waste Day: This event is currently scheduled for the morning of September 12th. Bailey will provide promotional material when it becomes available for distribution. We will be looking for EIAC volunteers to support this event. 2 ● Book Distribution: Cheryl reported that all three sets of books have been prepared for distribution with the next one occurring later this year prior to the start of the 2026/2027 school year. No further updates. ● Logo Shirts: No updates. ● Solar Projects: Bob presented the EIAC position statement in support of the ordinance change at the April 6, 2026 BOC meeting. The ordinance change request was voted down 3-2. ● MEC Project Update: Enbridge has scheduled a community open house to review project updates and specifically plans for transporting water for the purpose of testing the new LNG tank. The meeting will be in the Science Building on the PCC campus on May 14th from 5-7pm. Bob is planning to attend. ● Microsoft Megasite : Microsoft released an updated web site specifically for the Person County data center project: https://local.microsoft.com/blog/person-county-datacenter- project/ ● Hyco Coal/Gas Conversion: No updates. ● 2025 CT article plans and status: Discussion on ideas and plans for future articles for the CT newspaper. ○ January - 2025 Climate Update (Published 1/15) ○ February - Burn Ordinance (Published 2/19) ○ March - New Recycle Center (Published 3/12) ○ April - Air Quality Impacts on Respiratory Health (Published 4/9) ○ May - Litter Sweep Review (Published 4/23) ○ June - Data Center Construction Best Practices (Draft in progress) ○ July - Return of Nuclear Energy ○ August - Hydrogen as Fuel Source There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 6:30p.m. The next meeting is June 4, 2026 at the Senior Center Social Hall at 5:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Bob Brauer Chairperson EIAC Approved 7.2.2026
